Taken from the pages of the Book of Kells (circa 825) AD and Pictish symbol stone crosses of the 7th century. This Celtic interlace pattern is known as a Wheel of Life because it is symmetrical both vertically and horizontally. It represents heaven on earth, the four directions; 4 seasons and elements. The continuous loveknot which makes up the pattern is symbolic of the dance of life, stepping left and right. Interestingly, the Wheel pattern of a cross in a circle is found in every culture and represents the sun or a heavenly body. In Celtic designs it is know as a Celtic Cross. The Book of Kells is an illuminated bible which incorporated ancient Celtic symbols into the texts artwork.
